Great news! Our deferred annuity products will continue to earn a 4% rate of return effective from the first of this year. All new and existing annuities will benefit from this interest rate.
New annuities will have their guaranteed rate of return set at 3%. This is an increase from the previous 2.5% guaranteed rate of return and reflects the treasury rate formula that we adhere to. Existing annuity contracts will continue to have the guaranteed rate of return that was set when it was issued.
Our annuity products are still a great investment. They have no fees, either, although there is a surrender charge if you withdraw funds in excess of 10% per year within the first six years of the annuity. There is no surrender charge after six years. Also, the IRS imposes penalties on early withdrawals from tax-deferred accounts, so check with your tax advisor before annuitizing or withdrawing your annuity before age 59 1/2.

National Codependency Awareness Month This January is the time to help those in codependent relationships. A codependent relationship is one where one of the participants feels the need to be dependent on or controlled by the other. The codependent individual will try to make up for the abuse they are exposed to by suppressing their own needs and ignoring their feelings. They constantly seek acceptance, and any criticism can trigger a reaction. If you suspect a friend or family member is struggling with codependency, help them to seek therapy and support them in their struggles.

World Braille DayJanuary 4 January 4 marks the birthday of Louis Braille, creator of the Braille writing system. Holidays and Observances World Peace Day - January 1, 2024
Beginning in 1967, a World Day of Peace was announced by Pope Paul VI. It has been celebrated regularly since then, calling for peace throughout the world and encouraging everyone to do their part in pursuing peace. It wasn't until 1981 that the United Nations took up the same call, setting aside September 21 as an International Day of Peace. In 1582, Pope Gregory created the Gregorian Calendar to correct some errors found in the then-used Julian Calendar. It was adopted by most of the Christian world in 1752, but not by all, and so some, known as Orthodox Christians, stuck with the Julian Calendar. The date difference between the two calendars has grown to 13 days, making Orthodox Christmas fall on January 7 in the commonly used Gregorian calendar. In the book of Leviticus, the prohibition on eating the fruit of trees during the first three years after they are planted led to the concept of trees having a birthday. Fun Days National Hat Day is January 15 and celebrates the article of clothing that is documented to go back to at least 3,000 BC -- although there are artifacts as old as 30,000 years that may depict the wearing of hats. Our members have been particularly busy spreading cheer this past month! We have no less than 9 different IFS projects to report on! Thank you to all our charitable members, and remember, any council that completed their charitable project before the end of last year can still report their project until the end of February and still receive their eligible reimbursements. And of course, the 2024 donation season is open, we look forward to receiving and approving your IFS projects this year.
Felician School for Exceptional Children
The Grand Council of New Jersey chose as their project to support the Felician School for Exceptional Children in Lodi, as they have since it was founded in 1971. The Felician School cares for youngsters with special needs and helps them to live independent and productive lives.

Calvary Hospital
The Grand Council of New York threw its support to the Calvary Hospital, which provides hospice and palliative care for those with terminal diseases. Calvary Hospital has been serving the community since its founding as The Women of Calvary in 1899.

Mansfield Food Pantry
The Grand Council of Massachusetts provided a donation to the Mansfield Food Pantry, which provides free food to Mansfield residents in need. They provide shelf-stable items like pasta, rice, soups, fruits, and vegetables, serving more than 350 households a year.

New England Hemophilia Association
The New England Hemophilia Association was also a target of the generosity of the Grand Council of Massachusetts. The NEHA is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those with bleeding disorders and their families.

Plymouth Area Coalition
Alpha-Agassiz Council #1 joined their efforts with the staff at the Home Office to provide Christmas gifts for a sponsored family through the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless. The Coalition works to nurture and empower families and individuals seeking assistance with their basic needs by providing them with shelter, food, and resources needed to help them reach independence.

Friends of Silver Springs State Park
Medora Council #1648 donated to the Friends of Silver Springs State Park, a citizen support organization that works to protect Park resources and raise community involvement.

Maryville Academy
The Maryville Academy also received a donation from Medora Council #1648. Maryville Academy is a childcare organization that works to help children reach their fullest potential intellectually, spiritually, morally, and emotionally.

The New York Institute for Special Education
Claremont Council #1655 made the New York Institute for Special Education one of their IFS projects. The NYISE has been serving children with special needs since 1831.

Thanksgiving Food Drive of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
In the spirit of the season, Claremont Council #1655 donated to the Thanksgiving Food Drive at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The food drive is an annual tradition to share with the needy in the community so they can share the joy of Thanksgiving.
