   Helping Texas Heal

The disastrous flash floods in Texas along the Guadalupe River in early July took the lives of at least 135 people and caused widespread destruction. The event was worse than a 100-year flood was envisioned to be, occurring in the middle of the night in an area without an adequate warning system in place.

Our Fraternal Department is calling on every grand and subordinate council to help support recovery efforts through a reputable charitable organization that will provide support directly to those affected by the catastrophe. Please let the Fraternal Director know of your support by letter, email, or phone call.

Thank you in advance for displaying the best qualities of fraternalism by helping those in times of need!

Illinois was ready to support the Supreme Regent's Book Collection initiative when she presented her program by inviting the councils and members to bring books for the benefit of the Shriners Hospital for Children. A vast selection of books was assembled and presented to Dan Winter of Shriners Children's. The books were appropriate for a wide range of ages and topics and will be available for their patients to enjoy while at the hospital and to take home with them.

Off to College!

While summer is still in full swing, let's not forget that many college classes begin this month. Now may be the time to begin preparing for a first-time college school year or for resuming your college career. Get yourself ready early so you can enjoy the break time in peace.

  • Check with your college and get a list of the key dates you need to know
  • Collect and keep your important documents in a safe place. Don't forget to get digital copies and keep them on your phone.
  • Plan what things you'll be bringing. You'll have limited space, but need room for all necessary items (clothing/bedding/towels/personal hygiene items/electronics and chargers/books) as well as some comfort items (books/music/posters/whiteboard).
  • Arrange with your roommate which items can be shared (refrigerator/microwave/etc). Agree on any rules for the room, including visitors, study times, quiet times, and anything else that is important to you.
  • Arrange to meet up with friends going to the same school, but don't forget to make new friends, too. Plan to join a few groups to break the ice with a common interest.
  • Be serious about your study habits. Plan your study/homework/lab schedule for times that work for you.
  • Don't go it alone! There are many resources for things you may need: family & friends at home, new & old friends at school, and various student departments on campus. Don't forget the Royal Arcanum: our Home Office and Junior Departments can help in keeping you connected.
