   Helping Texas Heal

The disastrous flash floods in Texas along the Guadalupe River in early July took the lives of at least 135 people and caused widespread destruction. The event was worse than a 100-year flood was envisioned to be, occurring in the middle of the night in an area without an adequate warning system in place.

Our Fraternal Department is calling on every grand and subordinate council to help support recovery efforts through a reputable charitable organization that will provide support directly to those affected by the catastrophe. Please let the Fraternal Director know of your support by letter, email, or phone call.

Thank you in advance for displaying the best qualities of fraternalism by helping those in times of need!

Off to College!

While summer is still in full swing, let's not forget that many college classes begin this month. Now may be the time to begin preparing for a first-time college school year or for resuming your college career. Get yourself ready early so you can enjoy the break time in peace.

  • Check with your college and get a list of the key dates you need to know
  • Collect and keep your important documents in a safe place. Don't forget to get digital copies and keep them on your phone.
  • Plan what things you'll be bringing. You'll have limited space, but need room for all necessary items (clothing/bedding/towels/personal hygiene items/electronics and chargers/books) as well as some comfort items (books/music/posters/whiteboard).
  • Arrange with your roommate which items can be shared (refrigerator/microwave/etc). Agree on any rules for the room, including visitors, study times, quiet times, and anything else that is important to you.
  • Arrange to meet up with friends going to the same school, but don't forget to make new friends, too. Plan to join a few groups to break the ice with a common interest.
  • Be serious about your study habits. Plan your study/homework/lab schedule for times that work for you.
  • Don't go it alone! There are many resources for things you may need: family & friends at home, new & old friends at school, and various student departments on campus. Don't forget the Royal Arcanum: our Home Office and Junior Departments can help in keeping you connected.

A Message from our Supreme Regent

    Hello Members,

On Saturday, June 14th I presented my program “Revive the Royal Arcanum Family” at my home jurisdiction of Illinois. The Grand Regent Lisa Crawford hosted the luncheon at the Wildfire Restaurant in Glenview. We had a fantastic turnout. I was very pleased to see the number that were able to attend. Lisa introduced our Deputy Supreme Regent and life member David Covelli and past Supreme Regent and elected member to the executive committee Carl Krzystofczyk. It made my heart feel so good to see so many familiar faces that I hadn’t seen in quite a while.

The Grand Council of Illinois donated over two hundred and fifty books to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Oak Park. Dan Winters their senior philanthropist was in attendance to explain to our members in great detail how the Shriners help thousands of children every year with some of the most complicated diseases children have to endure. He was amazed to see the number of books we collected. He told us that when the children select a book during their visit to the hospital for treatment, they can take the book home with them as it becomes theirs. I am very happy that my initiative to collect books is so beneficial to many worthwhile organizations.

I am looking forward to my next visitation to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in September.

    Fondly,

    Nicole M. Covelli
    Supreme Regent

       Why Giving Matters

Since its inception, the Royal Arcanum has focused on the care of its members, charitable institutions, and the youth. We are proud to be part of the fraternal system, which is estimated to provide over $2 billion in charitable assistance annually. Have you ever stopped to reflect on why our founders made it an essential foundational principle, and why it continues to be a vital element of the Royal Arcanum today?

At the founding of the Royal Arcanum, the United States was in the midst of change. It was a decade after the Civil War ended and the start of the second Industrial Revolution. The rapid social changes created a challenge to the country's principles of equality and a longing for institutions to take on the task of providing for the most needy. The Royal Arcanum's founding beliefs of Virtue, Mercy, and Charity aligned with the general mood of the times and led to a rapid growth in membership.

Over the last 148 years, society has changed. For example, our fraternal status is defined in the IRS code, and it exhorts us to provide fraternal and charitable support as part of the requirements for maintaining our recognized status. Aside from the legal requirement, it's important to realize that most charitable organizations rely on donations from individuals and small groups for the bulk of their operations: on average, 75% of their income comes from individual giving.

Causes unite people. Your council's charitable activities are important to the Royal Arcanum's IRS status, to the organizations that receive your fraternal support, and to attract members. Be bold in trumpeting your fraternal activities, and partner with non-members when you can. Your common interests may attract them to become members, as it has for nearly a century and a half.

       Charitable Activities Highlights

Last month marked the annual start of the Donald E. Ferry Jr. Spirit of Service program. This program was created in honor of Donald E. Ferry, Jr., a Legion of Honor member who worked in the Home Office for 29 years. Don's passion as a fraternalist shone most brightly in his passion for working on the Junior Committee in the Supreme Council. The Executive Committee commissioned the Donald E. Ferry Jr. Spirit of Service program to annually reward the council that emulates Don's zeal by supporting a children's charity or performing a charitable program for the benefit of children.

Councils can participate by sponsoring a volunteer program benefiting children from June 1st through November 20th. Hands-on participation of council members is a requirement for this program, donation-only support is not qualified, but we're sure that members who participate will feel a sense of accomplishment. The winning council will receive a $500 award. Now is a perfect time to plan your sponsorship so that it is completed by the November 20 deadline.

         Buddy Project Updates

Last year, the Executive Committee introduced Buddy Projects, which encourages different jurisdictions to work together on a common cause. Here are the latest highlights on our Buddy Projects.

      Helping the Hemophilia Community

      Tony Basa, Supreme Secretary

Grand Councils, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Florida are teaming up again. Last year we reached out to the Lions Club in our jurisdictions and helped with their vision program and it was a big success. We have changed our focus to the Hemophilia Community, here in Massachusetts is the New England Hemophilia Association that helps residents in MA, RI, CT, NH, ME, and VT with bleeding disorders.  A person with Hemophilia has trouble when it comes to stopping bleeding, they need help with Factor.  Factors are taken from our blood and purified, and they are used to help them clot when bleeding.  People with Hemophilia lead normal long lives.  If anyone would like further information, please feel free to reach out to me and I can help you with contacting someone in your area.  Abasa@royalarcanum.com.

      Supporting the Shriners

      Karen Lockaby, Supreme Vice Regent

The Executive Committee, in an effort to encourage comradery between jurisdictions, decided to create the Buddy Program. Rhode Island paired up with North Carolina. North Carolina for years has raised funds for the Shriners Children’s Hospital. At the behest of North Carolina, Rhode Island organized a fundraiser for the RI Chapter of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. On March 15th, 2025, the Guests of Honor were Potentate Nicholas Oliver, recipient, Tessa Normandin and Renee Rheaume. The Shriners specialize in pediatric care for children. They help with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries, burns, cleft lips, and many other conditions.

In a surprising turn of events, Cindy Macon, Chairperson of the Executive Committee, came from New Jersey to present Kenneth Kolek with his 50-Year Award. Kenneth was surprised and overjoyed to receive the award!

In RI in attendance were two recipients of the Shriners generosity. Tessa, age 11, was diagnosed with a condition called arthrogryposis. Tessa’s muscles don’t properly attach to her bones. She had had to undergo more surgeries at her young age than most adults in a lifetime.

The other guest, Renee was born 3 months premature, She was developmentally delayed. She required many years of physical and occupational therapy. She suffers from severe allergies, including peanuts, mustard, walnuts, almonds, and many others.

      American Heart Association

Last month we highlighted Supreme Secretary Tony Basa's upcoming participation in supporting the American Heart Association's 2025 Southern New England Heart Walk. This month we are pleased to add the support of the Grand Council of Massachusetts in sponsoring his walk on Saturday, June 7th. The walk will raise funds to save lives from America's top two killers: heart disease and stroke. Many organizations raise money through sponsored walks, but it was the American Heart Association that started it all. There's still time to throw your support behind Tony and the American Heart Association. Email Tony at ABasa@royalarcanum.com to pledge money or just to encourage him.

         College News

High School days are ending for Seniors. It's time to enjoy a bit of summer relaxation soon. Before you completely kick up your feet, don't forget a few important tasks.

      Final Exams

You're not done with high school yet! Be sure to study for those exams and lock in the grades you've earned all year. No need to risk a late college rejection because of a poor showing in your last tests in high school. You've got this!

      Prepare to be a Freshman

Being a senior has been nice, but come autumn, you'll be a freshman again. A freshman in college, though, is an exciting time. Prepare to make it the best time yet. Check when you should sign up for orientation -- that may be soon or may be right now. There may be some online registrations needed to even get started. Check with the information you received from your school of choice, and remember to keep to the schedule they recommend.

      Still Need College Funds?

While many scholarship application deadlines have already passed, that doesn't mean all have. Some scholarships may still be available. Sites such as College Raptor’s Scholarship Search tool may provide needed financial help.

It's also a good time to line up a summer job, and may be time to start looking for some side work that fits into your upcoming class schedule. If you prepare now, it will make the transition easier and just may make your life at college a bit more pleasant.
