   Have You Heard of MOVEMBER?

I was talking with my wife on a topic for the November article, and she asked me, “Have I heard of Movember?  I had not, so she sent me the link. So, I am sharing this information with you. This site is for men’s health issues.  Movember has funded over 1,200 men’s health projects in more than 20 countries.

Movember is a global charity event held each November to raise funds and awareness for men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Participants, known as "Mo Bros" and "Mo Sistas," grow moustaches, take on fitness challenges, or host events to spark conversations and collect donations. The funds raised support a wide range of men's health projects worldwide.

How it works
  • Grow a Mo: Men start the month clean-shaven and grow a moustache for the entire month, using it as a conversation starter to raise awareness and funds.
  • Take the Move Challenge: Participants can commit to walking or running 60 miles over the month to support men's health.
  • Host a Mo-ment: People can organize their own events to raise money and awareness.
  • Fundraising: Participants set up a "Mo Space" online to share their progress and collect donations from friends, family, and colleagues.

Focus areas
  • Prostate Cancer: Raising awareness and funding research for this disease.
  • Testicular Cancer: Addressing the most common cancer in young men.
  • Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: Tackling the stigma around men's mental health and providing support, as men die by suicide at a disproportionately high rate.

Impact
  • Movember has funded over 1,200 men's health projects across more than 20 countries.
  • The organization aims to help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives by changing the way they think about and act on their health.

A Pawtucket Council Tradition - Painted Pumpkins

For many years, Pawtucket Council has brought joy to lots of elderly people. The Members of Pawtucket Council get creative by painting pumpkins every year. When the tradition began, they would get dressed up in their Halloween costumes and visit a local Nursing Home. The Members would take turns going into the rooms of the elderly people and deliver a painted pumpkin to each patient. You should have seen the smiles! Some of the people are bedridden, and to have a young child bring them a pumpkin was such a thrill! It makes you feel great to bring such joy to people in need. Since Covid, we have had to discontinue the practice of hand-delivering the pumpkins. We now need to leave it to the Staff at the facility to distribute the pumpkins.

One year – both costumed children and adults – piled into a large elevator. All of a sudden, we heard a noise. The elevator had stopped! The children were afraid. We called for help, and not long after, the Fire Department arrived to rescue us. Unbeknownst to us, we were stuck between 2 floors. We all had to climb out with the assistance of the Firefighters. It was a bit like a Clown Car because the people kept climbing out of the elevator. The Firefighters couldn’t believe how many people we fit into the elevator! What an experience!

       Leaves are Falling!  October's Calling!

And we’re certainly not stalling from carrying out the fraternal mission of service as the Royal Arcanum.  The grand and subordinate councils continue to promote our fraternal benefit society to potential new members and to community causes.  Members’ enthusiasm and ‘Revived’ spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood are promoting the Society with volunteer endeavors and charitable initiatives; they are making a positive difference from coast to coast.

It’s a wonderful time of year when we hear from many of our jurisdictions of plans to share blessings, fellowship, and goodwill with those in need. Sadly, several charitable organizations that closed during the pandemic never reopened, and volunteers may now be smaller in number. However, needs remain prevalent.

We acknowledge all of our members for their dedication to furthering the fraternal cause and exemplifying the “Charity” that is our greatest attribute.  Member engagement, community partnerships, and lasting friendships are formed in our great fraternal benefit society, and we’re happy to have our fraternal family welcoming new members.

Take a minute to introduce family and friends to the Royal Arcanum.  Our Bulletins, brochures, and website highlight the Society, but the greatest invitation just may be a “call” from you!

A "Spook-tacular" Time for Our Juniors

The Royal Arcanum proudly continues a variety of programs with lots of “treats” for our younger members.  With classes now well underway, make sure that eligible Juniors who will be graduating from high school next spring apply for our scholarship program before December 31st.

It’s also time to recognize young leaders in your council by submitting nominations for the Youth of the Year Award.  Program guidelines are on the Royal Arcanum website and in the spring issue of the Bulletin.  Be sure to send all nomination materials to the Home Office by November 30th.  Junior honorees receive a $300 award.

Encourage the young members to participate in the Junior Writing program; winning submissions are printed in the Bulletin, and the Juniors can earn a gift card and trophy.  The Bulletin’s coloring and puzzle pages continue to be well-received, as Juniors receive Amazon gift cards for their submissions.

We hope that many councils will host a Junior Family Day activity for the holiday season. Contact the Junior Director at least a month in advance of the event so that a little something special from the Junior Department can be sent for the celebration.

       Halloween Snack Mix

After trick-or-treating, enjoy this treat and relax with family and friends.

    Ingredients:

    4 cups popped popcorn
    1/4 cup cocktail peanuts
    1/4 cup mini pretzels
    1/4 cup candy pumpkins
    1/2 cup white chocolate chips
    1 teaspoon shortening

In a large bowl, stir together popcorn, peanuts, pretzels, and candy pumpkins. Spread onto a parchment paper-lined jelly roll pan.

Add white chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and add shortening or coconut oil. Microwave at medium (50%) for about 20 seconds and stir until smooth. If chips are not smooth, return to microwave at 10-second intervals, stirring after each until smooth. Drizzle over popcorn mix and allow to reach room temperature for the chocolate to harden before serving.

    Makes about 5 cups.

         Life Insurance Awareness Month

The song, “See You in September” may prompt us to take a deeper glance into our insurance coverage.  Life Insurance Awareness Month is observed every September to promote the importance of life insurance for financial security.  Various programs aim to educate consumers about the role of life insurance in protecting families and to encourage them to review their coverage needs.

The Royal Arcanum, operating now for over 148 years, has permanent life insurance plans available for newborns through senior years.   There’s also a PLUS to being a member of our Society.  Fraternal benefits, Junior programs, community service initiatives, socials, charitable projects, and other engaging opportunities are available through member involvement in the subordinate, grand, and supreme councils.

Visit our website, www.royalarcanum.com, to learn more about the insurance plans that are available.  The ‘Timeline’ brochure provides a great snapshot of the offerings.  You can also phone the Home Office at 1-888-272-2686 if you’d care to increase your coverage or if you need additional information for enrolling a family member or friend.

Our fraternal family is growing, and we look forward to welcoming more members into the Royal Arcanum!

      Cindy Macon
      Chairperson of the Executive Committee

Make it a September to Remember

The Royal Arcanum commends our officers and members throughout the jurisdictions for their dedication to the principles of “Virtue, Mercy, and Charity” and for extending charitable spirit to communities, near and far.

With councils resuming regular schedules as September gets underway, it might be a good time for councils to consider making a donation to a charitable cause or conducting a collection drive or activity that will benefit a charity.  In doing so, you’ll help the cause and at the same time have the opportunity to introduce others to the good work being done by Royal Arcanum members and councils.  Everyone’s efforts will make this month a September to Remember!

         Inspirational quotes

“A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment; luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and, probably, income; luckiest in their educational and career opportunities; and luckiest in so many other ways difficult to enumerate — these are the folks who reap the largest rewards. The only way for even a putative meritocracy to hope to pass ethical muster, to be considered fair, is if those who are the luckiest in all of those respects also have the greatest responsibility to work hard, to contribute to the betterment of the world, and to share their luck with others.”
